Times have changed in the real estate industry, and the days of the traditional bricks-and-mortar brokerage are drawing to a close. As home prices have increased over the last 20 to 30 years, commissions have increased ten-fold. Home sellers who were once willing to pay a $6,000 real estate commission are not so eager to pay $60,000 today. They’re looking for better options. Buyers have changed their habits, too, and they no longer need a listing agent to help them find and purchase their ideal home. Nearly all buyers now search for their next home on the Internet. They call a buyer’s agent, but no one needs the listing agent, except to put the listing in the MLS. But now any licensee can do that, including flat fee brokers.
